Gary D. Hubler, 52 of Caldwell Idaho died from injuries received in a mid-air collision on Friday September 14, 2007, at the Reno National Air Races.

Gary wasn't just the defending five-time champion of the Formula One races.  He was a gentleman racer, friend, mentor and cherished member of the racing community.  The magnitutude of the loss of this man to the flying community and his hometown community of Nampa, Idaho, is immense.  Gary was a superb pilot  who held ratings from gliders to DE-3s and had flown over 200 different aircraft.  If it was to be flown, he flew it.  He was a member of Quiet Birdmen, EAA and War Birds, and the National Air Transportation Association along with other organizations and associations.  Gary also flew in T-6 and Unlimited classes at the Reno Air races and other races around the country.

In his daily job, Gary was  a crop duster  in the business that his father originally started  at Hubler Field in Nampa, ID.  Although Gary's career and hobby was flying, it was obvious to all that his family was his life.   Gary is survived by his wife, Debra Jean (his high-school sweetheart); his parents, Bill and Betty; his children and their families, Eric and Genevieve Hubler and their children, Alli and Piper; and Becci and Alex Wade and their children, Giselle and Evangeline; his brothers, Bob and Nelda Hubler, Terry and Sheila Hubler and Bruce and Becky Hubler and numerous nieces and nephews.  Gary had  previously lost a son, Jon, a brother, Dan, and his best friend in flying accidents.

The Formula One racers are a tight-knit community, bonded by a shared passion.  Gary was a friend to all--willing to answer questions, give advice or even loan parts for a plane.  His death has rocked the Formula One crews, leaving a gaping hole in this close "family".  He will never be forgotten, and the races will never be quite the same.

A memorial has been established in Gary's name at the War Hawk Air Museum, 201 Municipal Drive, Nampa, ID 83687.  Messages for Gary's family can be left at www.mariah 95.com.
